What is Graston Therapy?
The Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy known as instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization. It is one of the many approaches that uses instruments with small massage/scraping motions to help break up scar tissue and identify areas where restrictions may be present.
Through a combination of techniques, the goal is to reduce pain and increase function. This can be accomplished through:
- Promoting improved healing for the injured soft tissue.
- Breaking down the scar tissue and fascia restrictions associated with some type of trauma to the soft tissue, like a pulled ligament, tendon fascia, or strained muscle.
- Reducing restrictions by stretching connective tissue to rearrange the structure of the soft tissue being treated, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia.
Other Benefits of Graston Therapy
Graston therapy has other healing benefits as well. When patients are given a manual or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), blood and nutrients get pulled to the area and this response leads to faster recovery.

The Graston Therapy Method
Graston therapy is an innovative treatment method that utilizes six core tools made of stainless steel with convex and concave edges. The instruments are designed to scan over injured fibrotic tissue, identifying any problems while providing needed care in the process.
This therapy uses cross-friction massage, which involves brushing or rubbing against the grain of scar tissue. This process temporarily causes inflammation in order to increase blood flow and stimulate new skin cell growth around an area affected by trauma where it can heal faster than without help from this treatment method.
It is a brilliant way to get rid of back pain because it targets the kinetic chain. This means that if you have hip or abdominal problems, your therapist might also work those areas along with other regions such as hamstrings and shoulders which often seem remote but are connected through our fascial makeup.
What to Expect with Graston Therapy
If you’re looking for a great way to get relief from discomfort without medication, Graston therapy is an excellent choice. Our experienced therapists will work directly on the area of your body where you’re experiencing discomfort, and typically it only takes up to 10 visits over several weeks for you to get the relief you need.
You can expect the following:
During Your Treatment
- Our skilled specialists use their Graston instruments to scan, then treat the affected area.
- The treatment usually consists of our therapists rubbing the affected area with Graston therapy stainless steel instruments. The massage techniques used are very specific and calculated for each individual patient to get the best results from this treatment plan.
- Treatment is generally 30 to 60 seconds per area treated.
- It is common to have some very minor discomfort during the procedure.
After Your Treatment
- Patients may experience soreness, bruising or red dots over the area treated. These are known as petechiae and typically last for about two weeks after treatment has been completed.
- Soreness after a session can be expected, but if you feel any discomfort, we recommend ice application for 15-20 minutes following the treatment.
- To speed up your recovery, we recommend using an exercise, strengthening, and stretching program in conjunction with Graston therapy to help rehabilitate your back and help the healing of the injured tissue.
The benefits of Graston therapy for chronic lower back pain and disability have been shown to improve your injuries. Patients indicated that they experienced an increased range of motion, less discomfort during movement as well as increased flexibility after just one session.

What the Healing Process Looks Like After Many Sessions
After a Graston Therapy treatment at National Chiropractic & Sports, clients can expect a healing process that involves a combination of rest, exercise, and regular follow-up appointments. The goal of Graston Therapy is to accelerate the healing process of soft tissues, which can take several weeks to show significant improvement. Following a treatment session, clients may experience muscle soreness or discomfort for a short period of time, but this is a normal and expected response as the body begins to heal itself. Depending on the severity of the condition and the client’s unique needs, our team of specialists may recommend additional treatments or exercises to help speed up the healing process. Through ongoing support and personalized treatment plans, National Chiropractic & Sports is dedicated to helping clients recover from injuries, relieve pain, and achieve optimal health and wellness.
